I'm wondering if it will stay in place well when used after installation.

You need to sand down the connection area between the iron mesh and the drain plug with sandpaper to make it easier to insert and remove from the sink drain. If you don't do that, the connection area will stick out a bit and get caught in the drain pipe groove, making it difficult to remove.
